The Gaia Starter Kit™
Welcome.
We’re glad you’re here.
Before we begin, we’d like to hand you your complimentary Gaia Starter Kit™.
Inside you’ll find…
One name.
One nationality, or more.
One language.
One family.
Several opinions you probably won’t remember choosing.
A collection of beliefs that arrived suspiciously early in life.
A political aisle.
A religious aisle.
A favorite sport.
A favorite sports team.
A personality type.
A career ladder.
Several invisible social rules.
Three emotional support belief systems.
A few fears that get surprisingly good at making friends.
And…
just to keep things interesting…
a lifetime warranty on certainty.
We can have an external source come in and reinforce all given beliefs.
Pay no attention to your intuition.
Why listen to your intuition when we’ve already given you notes on what to believe and how to believe it.
(Warranty may become void upon asking questions.)
Please keep all of these together.
You’ll be asked to defend them shortly.
🤣
Excellent.
Now…
A few important instructions.
Take pride in these identities.
Believe them with your whole heart.
Most importantly…
don’t ask where they came from.
Everyone around you already agrees.
If someone questions one of them…
Fight.
If someone believes differently…
Fight.
If someone worships differently…
Fight.
Votes differently…
Fight.
Lives differently…
Fight.
Questions differently…
Definitely fight.
If fear helps convince people…
use fear.
If certainty feels better than curiosity…
choose certainty.
If it doesn’t…
still choose certainty.
If belonging requires pretending…
pretend.
This is the way.
It may feel strange at first.
Don’t worry.
After enough repetition…
it will simply feel… normal.

STRIP IT AWAY
…
One By One
Wait.
…
Time out.
Actually…
Let’s try something else.
😊
Temet Nosce.
Know Thyself.
So…
Who am I???
Who are we???
Those are wonderfully large questions.
Fortunately…
we don’t have to answer them all today.
😂
In order to discover who we truly are…
it may help…
to gently strip away…
everything we are not.
Just as everything that is given…
can also be taken away…
perhaps there is freedom…
in discovering who we are…
before life decides to ask.
Who are you?
“Michael.”
Nope.
That was given to you.
Strip it away.
“I’m a mother.”
Beautiful.
Relationship.
Strip it away.
“I’m a son.”
Relationship.
Strip it away.
“I’m a husband.”
Relationship.
Strip it.
“I’m single.”
Relationship status.
Strip it.
“I’m a CEO.”
Occupation.
Strip it.
“I’m retired.”
Former occupation.
Strip.
“I’m an artist.”
Expression.
Strip.
“I’m a Marine.”
Service.
Strip it away.
“…who exactly were you servicing anyway?”
We’ll come back to that one.
😂
“I’m American.”
Geography….kind of.
Strip it.
“I’m Mexican.”
Also geography,
reinforced by the illusion of separation.
Strip it.
“I’m Christian.”
Belief system.
Strip.
“I’m Muslim.”
Belief system.
Strip it.
“I’m Jewish.”
Belief system.
Strip.
“I’m spiritual.”
Sneakier belief system.
Strip it away.
🤣
“I’m an atheist.”
Believe it or not…
also a belief system.
Strip it away.
“I’m conservative.”
One political wing.
Strip it.
“I’m liberal.”
The other political wing, same bird.
Strip it away.
“I’m an introvert.”
Personality model.
Strip it.
“I’m an extrovert.”
Different personality model.
Strip it away.
“I’m highly sensitive.”
Description.
Strip it.
“I’m an empath.”
Interesting.
Still a description.
Strip it away.
“I’m rich.”
Financial condition.
Strip.
“I’m broke.”
Financial condition.
Strip it.
“I’m successful.”
Compared to whom?
Validated by what?
Strip it away.
“I’m a failure.”
According to whom?
Strip it away.
“I’m awakened.”
…
Especially that one.
🤣
Take.
It.
Off.
Take your clothes off.
…
Not literally.
This is still a Golden Temple.
Please keep your pants on.
😂
We’re talking about identities.
The ones you’ve collected.
The ones that fit.
The ones that don’t.
The ones handed to you.
The ones you proudly chose.
The ones you feel you’ve earned.
The ones you secretly wish you could return without the receipt.
One…
by…
one…
Place them gently in the basket.
◦
You’ll notice something interesting.
None of these are bad.
They are all a part of our experience.
Being a mother isn’t the problem.
Being a Marine isn’t the problem.
Being a doctor isn’t the problem.
Being spiritual isn’t the problem.
Being wealthy isn’t the problem.
The problem begins the moment we confuse what we experience…
with what we are.
THE COSTUMES WE WEAR
The world spends extraordinary amounts of energy convincing us to become…
someone.
something.
anything…
other than what we already are.
Imagine the world’s largest theater.
Billions of actors.
Millions of costumes.
Uniforms.
Robes.
Business suits.
Yoga pants.
Designer labels.
Pajamas being confidently marketed as “remote work attire.”
(Called myself out on that one.)
😂
Every costume comes with lines.
Every role comes with expectations.
Every expectation quietly whispers…
“This is who you are.”
Until one day…
someone walks backstage.
Looks around.
Looks at the costumes.
Looks at the scripts.
Looks at the mirrors.
Then quietly asks…
“Soo…
“Which character have you become so good at playing…
that you’ve forgotten it was a character?”

◦
Not what you do.
That is a performance.
Not what you own.
That is an experience.
Not what others call you.
That is a label.
Not what you believe.
That is a system.
Not what you’ve survived.
That is a story.
Not even what you think about yourself.
Those are thoughts.
Beautiful thoughts.
Painful thoughts.
Inspired thoughts.
Fearful thoughts.
Still…
thoughts.
Strip them away.
By now you may be feeling slightly uncomfortable.
Naked even.
Congratulations.
That usually means we’ve wandered beyond the gift shop.
🤣
Stay with it.
No rush.
Temet Nosce has waited over two thousand years, at least.
It can wait as long as it takes while you sit quietly with perhaps the most unsettling…
and liberating…
question you may ever ask yourself.
Who are you…
…when everything that can be given…
taken…
named…
praised…
criticized…
performed…
or defended…
has been placed gently in the basket?
Because if you do not know who you are…
how can you fully accept yourself?
And if you cannot fully accept yourself…
how can you fully love yourself?
Not the curated self.
Not the impressive self.
Not the useful self.
Not the productive self.
Not the performing self.
Not the spiritual résumé self with incense, crystals, and a suspiciously calm voice.
(Hold on a sec, I need to light my Palo Santo)
The real self.
The quiet one.
The strange one.
The tender one.
The powerful one.
The one beneath the costumes.
The one who was there before the world handed you the Gaia Starter Kit™ and said…
“Here.
Defend this.”
😂
This is where things get interesting.
Because many of us do not love ourselves.
We love our performance.
We love our usefulness.
We love our achievements.
We love our ability to be needed.
We love being praised.
We love being chosen.
We love being seen through identities we have learned to polish.
Personally, I have loved all of these as well.
Let’s ask ourselves honestly,
are we loving these aspects
or simply attached to them?
The moment the performance stops…
the moment the applause gets quiet…
the moment no one is validating the costume…
many do not know what remains.
So we seek love through roles.
Through attachment.
Through approval.
Through being good.
Through being attractive.
Through being what we believe is right.
Through being needed.
Through being the rescuer.
Through being the wounded one.
Through being the awakened one.
Especially that one.
Strip it away.
🤣
And this is not judgment.
This is human.
Beautifully, hilariously, heartbreakingly human.
We were taught to identify before we were taught to inquire.
We were taught to perform before we were taught to listen.
We were taught to defend before we were taught to understand.
So naturally…
we began calling attachment love.
We began calling possession love.
We began calling validation love.
We began calling fear love.
We began calling control love.
We began calling “please don’t leave me alone with myself” love.
And then wondered why love felt so heavy.
Why it felt so…
performative.
But unconditional love cannot grow from a self you do not know.
It cannot fully move through a self you reject.
It cannot be given from a place you have not entered.
For if I do not know myself…
I cannot fully embrace myself.
If I cannot embrace myself…
I cannot fully accept myself.
If I cannot accept myself…
I cannot fully love myself.
And if I cannot fully love myself…
then what am I offering another?
A need?
A bargain?
A performance?
A projection?
An attachment?
A beautifully wrapped emotional invoice?
🙈
Or a mask?
An illusion?
If I do not know myself…
who exactly is choosing?
And…
who exactly is being chosen?
Love may be present.
Of course it may be present.
Love is always trying to get in.
Love is persistent like that.
Rude, honestly.
It keeps showing up with flowers at the locked door of the heart.
🌼
But the depths of love require access.
Not perfection.
Access.
And self-knowledge is one of the doors.
Have you ever noticed…
that the parts of yourself you reject…
often resemble the parts of others that irritate you most?
Interesting…
Isn’t it?
Have you ever noticed…
that the qualities you’ve worked hardest to accept within yourself…
are often the qualities you now find easiest to accept in others?
Interesting…
Isn’t it?
Maybe this is why so many relationships feel confusing.
Not because people are difficult.
People are wonderfully, beautifully complicated.
Perhaps…
because many of us spend years introducing our performances…
then wondering why the relationship struggles when the actors become tired.
🎭
Could there be a relationship there?
No rush.
Just a question.
🌿
MEETING YOURSELF
Can I share something personal?
One of the greatest realizations of my life came during my last serious relationship.
Not because the relationship failed.
Not because someone was right or wrong.
But because I stumbled into a question I wasn’t expecting.
I realized…
I didn’t actually love myself.
At first, that was difficult to admit.
I was just starting to care about myself.
I appreciated parts of myself.
But love?
No.
Not then.
Unconditional love?
Not even close.
Because there were still parts of me I was trying to hide.
Parts I hoped no one would notice.
Parts I wanted to outgrow before I would finally give myself permission to love them.
The light?
Easy enough.
The shadow?
Not so much.
Then something began changing.
Instead of asking,
“How do I become someone worthy of love?”
I found myself asking,
“Who am I?”
“What within me have I not yet been willing to meet?”
What am I still trying to hide?
“Which are the parts of myself that are hard for me to love?”
These questions changed everything.
Whatever we bury
is a seed that will continue to grow.
Little by little…
I began discovering parts of myself that were… uncomfortable.
Old fears.
Old stories.
Old patterns.
All with their own “little” sprouts and roots.
Some were beautiful.
Some were humbling.
Some made me laugh.
Some made me cry.
None of them asked to be condemned.
They simply wanted to be known.
Seen.
Accepted.
I slowly realized something that now feels almost obvious.
I couldn’t fully love the parts of myself I didn’t even know.
And I couldn’t fully know the parts of myself I refused to look at.
Acceptance wasn’t the reward.
It was the doorway.
The more wholeheartedly I accepted myself…
light and shadow alike…
the less effort love seemed to require.
It wasn’t something I had to manufacture.
It was something that had finally been given room to move.
Then another surprise arrived.
As acceptance grew within me…
I found it easier to accept others.
Not because I was trying to be more compassionate.
Not because I had become “better.”
It simply became easier to accept someone else for carrying shadows I had already learned to sit beside within myself.
The more I came to know myself…
the more honestly I seemed able to meet another.
Not through the costume.
Not through the performance.
But person to person.
Being to being.
That doesn’t mean I always agree.
It doesn’t mean I never experience conflict.
It doesn’t mean I have somehow “arrived.”
Far from it.
Temet Nosce isn’t a destination.
For me, it has become a way of living.
A question that continues opening.
A path that continues widening.
And perhaps that’s the beautiful part.
An evolution that continues revealing.
Knowing yourself may not be something you finish.
For me, it has been something that has continued to deepen.
It may simply be something you continue saying yes to…
one honest discovery at a time.
What parts of yourself have been patiently waiting… not to be fixed… but seen, acknowledged, and met?
🌼
◦
FROM SELF TO SERVICE
Perhaps this is where the journey truly begins.
Not when you finally have all the answers.
But when you become willing to ask better questions.
Not once.
But gently.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Without rushing yourself toward certainty.
Without demanding an arrival.
Without trying to become someone else.
Just…
listening.
Listening to the parts of yourself that have patiently waited to be known.
Listening to the quiet nudges that rarely shout.
Listening beneath the performance.
Listening beneath the identity.
Listening beneath the noise.
Perhaps…
there is far more within you than you’ve ever been taught to notice.
No rush.
One question.
One moment.
One honest discovery at a time.
For a long time, humanity has looked outward for answers.
Sometimes upward.
Sometimes toward “authority.”
Sometimes toward certainty.
Perhaps…
the next great exploration isn’t farther away.
Perhaps…
it is closer than our own breath.
Inwards…
is the new upwards.
Not because there is nothing beyond us.
But because our relationship with everything beyond us begins with our relationship to what is within.
🌿
And who knows…
What becomes possible…
when we begin relating to ourselves with greater honesty?
What begins to awaken…
when awareness deepens?
What begins to quiet…
when fear no longer has to defend an identity?
What begins to emerge…
when we stop trying so hard to become…
and simply become willing to know?
Interesting questions.
They’ve been waiting a very long time.
🌼
Temet Nosce.
Know Thyself.
Not because someone told you who you are.
Not because someone else has the answer.
Because no one else can walk that path for you.
Walk gently.
Listen deeply.
Take your time.
◦
Perhaps…
knowing yourself was never meant to stop with yourself.
Perhaps…
it couldn’t.
Because relationship has a curious way of expanding.
The more deeply we know ourselves…
the more honestly we meet ourselves.

The more honestly we meet ourselves…
the more naturally we begin meeting another.
Not through expectation.
Not through performance.
Not through projection.
But presence to presence.
Being to being.
🌿
INWARDS IS THE NEW UPWARDS
For a very long time…
many of us have been taught…
that loving ourselves is selfish.
That putting ourselves first is wrong.
That sacrifice means continually placing everyone else’s needs before our own.
Perhaps…
we’ve misunderstood sacrifice.
Perhaps the invitation isn’t to sacrifice ourselves.
Perhaps…
it is to sacrifice everything we are not.
What if the greatest sacrifice…
is surrendering everything you were never meant to carry?
🐉
Not your joy.
Not your love.
Not your essence.
The masks.
The borrowed certainty.
The identities that have become too small.
🐉
😳
We’re not sacrificing the self.
We’re sacrificing the costume.
The identities.
The performance.
The illusion.
So what remains can finally live.
A tree does not produce fruit by emptying itself.
It produces fruit because it has allowed itself to become deeply rooted.
The fruit is not selfish.
Neither are the roots.
One makes the other possible.
Perhaps…
humanity isn’t so different.
🌳
When the cup is empty…
giving eventually becomes depletion.
When the cup overflows…
giving becomes nature.
No force.
No obligation.
No performance.
Just…
overflow.
🌼⛲️
The level at which we are willing to meet ourselves…
quietly becomes the level at which we are able to meet another.
Not because love is measured.
Because relationship deepens.
Perhaps this is how humanity evolves.
Not because someone finally tells us who we are.
But because enough of us become willing…
to know ourselves.
To accept ourselves.
To love ourselves.
To honor ourselves.
And then…
to naturally become available to one another.
Not as rescuers.
Not as saviors.
Not as gurus.
As examples.
As companions.
As fellow travelers.
As reminders.
🌿
Perhaps you’ve been waiting for someone…
who has quietly been waiting for you.
Meet them.
Then…
watch what becomes possible.
🐉

The next answer…
may not arrive as an answer at all.
It may arrive…
as a deeper relationship with the question.
🌿
🐉
Temet Nosce.
Know Thyself.
Again. 🌼
